Audio and Video Editing Services

Each recording is about something special; a feeling, a moment or a performance that matters to you. But even a good take is a bit off and not quite right for the recording. That’s where professional audio editing services can help. At James Smith Audio I collaborate with singers, musicians and producers to add quality and polish to their recordings, while keeping their personality intact. Whether you’re recording in a studio or in your own room, my philosophy on music audio editing is to fix what needs fixing, without altering what makes your music uniquely yours.

What’s Included in Audio Editing

Audio editing waveform detail

Good editing isn’t a matter of making all the notes absolutely uniform. The idea is to ensure that a recording sounds as natural as possible and that the listener does not notice the flaws. Editing can consist of (depending on what your track needs):

  • Vocal comping: To stitch together the best bits of multiple takes into one natural and expressive performance.
  • Timing correction: The technique of playing notes or phrases slightly ahead or behind the beat.
  • Song audio clean-up. Canceling clicks, distracting sounds and unwanted background noise (where applicable)
  • Crossfades / Cuts Transitions Between Cuts. Prevents, sudden changes or pops.
  • Session cleanup: arranging tracks and recordings for later production stages.

Each recording needs different levels of attention. The goal is to solve issues without causing any premature changes.

Keeping the Natural Feel of Your Performance

Vocalist recording in studio

Sometimes the most memorable aspect of a song is a slightly imperfect note or holding a phrase. I think those moments are important to me. As an audio editor for UK artists, I work remotely, and I focus on creating clean and consistent recordings without losing the emotional character of it. Any simple tweak should help the performance, not make it sound mechanical. When finished, your music should still sound like you.

How Does the Editing Process Work

It’s easy to get started. Send me your recordings and let me know what you want to work on. Before I start with music audio editing services, we shall discuss with each other the areas that need to be addressed. I will send you the files I have edited for your review when the work is complete. If you’re not sure it’s quite right, we can discuss changes to ensure the outcome is what you want.

What Should You Send?

WAV files are a good starting point, especially if there are multiple layers of vocals or instruments. Add any session notes, tempo or times referring to parts that are a concern. If you’re unsure about file compatibility, get in touch before sending your project.
