Sound Design for Music

Each track has its own personality, but sometimes a track requires a sound that you cannot get from the preset library. That’s the purpose of sound design for music. Whether it is the artist creating a new song or the music producer trying out new sounds, good sounds can give your music a unique feel. At James Smith Audio, I work on understanding that individual sounds can create the mood, flow, and emotion of a track, yet retain what makes the original concept so special.

What Can I Create For Your Music?

Working on music sound design

Sometimes, it’s a background layer that can shift the course. Sometimes it is a big sound that energises a moment in a certain way. When I’m working on music sound design, I like to mix things up and try a bunch of different approaches. And here’s how that generally looks:

  • Synth Sound Design: Creating sounds that no one else has, heavy bass sounds, and electronic bits that change and change as they play.
  • Sampling and synthesis: chopping up and mangling recordings, then mixing in synthesised sounds until something interesting appears.
  • Transition and texture: Stack sounds so that one part of a track leads into another part without sounding jarring.
  • Risers and impacts. Nothing beats a good build-up before a drop, or a well-placed hit that makes a moment land.
  • Custom sounds for producers. I also love creating sounds tailored to a producer’s arrangement or creative idea, so they slot in just right.

Depending on your project, you may be introduced to sounds that you can use.

A Creative Approach Starting With Your Music

I want to know what you are trying to say before we can talk about the plugins or technicalities. Is the track reflective and personal? Does it have to be chaotic, or is it better with a more lively vibe? These decisions are my tools to make sounds. I like to play with resonance and find different tones and textures with resonant frequencies. It also allows them to make their own sounds by sampling and synthesis.” The goal is not to make all of the elements pop. It’s to enhance the emotional flow of your music without compromising your artistic integrity. Your music is personal. Perhaps you’ve been composing a song for months, or maybe an idea just sprang into your mind one evening. Regardless, it is a matter of keen interest. As a music producer for artists in UK, I see collaboration as a dialogue, not a directive. I will share ideas, and describe production decisions and solicit feedback throughout. If it doesn’t feel good, we can try something else. My job as a record producer Sheffield musicians can work with is to help you build your musical identity, not take it over for you.

How Does The Process Work

We will start by discussing your track, influences and what you think is missing. I’ll then build an initial set of sounds that you can listen to from there. Your feedback is used to mould the next step and to make the ideas better before you agree to the final files. The pricing and delivery will be finalised according to your needs.
